ObstStadt Wien is a non-profit association dedicated to planting, preserving, and caring for fruit trees in public spaces throughout Vienna.
We believe that healthy, locally grown fruit should be accessible to everyone. Through community engagement, environmental stewardship, and long-term care, we help create a greener, more biodiverse, and more edible city.
What We Do
Since 2018, ObstStadt Wien has been creating and maintaining public fruit orchards and edible green spaces across the city.
Our activities include:
- Planting fruit trees in public spaces
- Coordinating tree stewardship programmes
- Promoting biodiversity and environmental awareness
- Organising educational and community events
- Mapping publicly accessible fruit trees through our Fruitmap
Public Fruit for Everyone
The fruit growing in our orchards is intended for everyone to enjoy.
We encourage responsible harvesting according to our Fair Use principle:
Take only as much fruit as you can carry in your hands.
This simple rule helps ensure that many people can enjoy the harvest while preventing excessive picking and waste.
Tree Stewardship
The fruit trees of ObstStadt Wien are cared for by our association together with dedicated tree stewards. Everyone can become a tree steward.
Our tree stewards support activities such as watering, observing tree health, and assisting with seasonal maintenance.
All stewardship activities are guided by our trained tree wardens, who provide expertise, organise care activities, and help ensure the long-term health of the trees.
This collaboration between the association, tree stewards, and tree wardens creates a strong community network dedicated to caring for Vienna’s public fruit trees.<
